Introduction

  • Part 1: Leg Workout #1
  • Part 2: Leg Workout #2
  • Part 3: Leg Workout #3

Tristyn Lee is one of the biggest fitness influencers in the world, and it’s easy to see why.

He has an incredibly muscular physique, and he also happens to be completely shredded year-round!

He also has some of the best legs in natural bodybuilding.

So how did Tristyn Lee build his incredible legs? Was it a secret training routine, or is Tristyn just gifted for building tree-trunk thighs?

Tristyn Lee trains his legs one day per week using high-volume bodybuilding style workouts. He likes to mix things up and perform many different exercises for his quads and hamstrings, such as squats, deadlifts, leg presses, hack squats, and walking lunges.

He also performs plenty of isolation exercises for his quads and hamstrings, like leg extensions and leg curls.

Here is one of Tristyn Lee’s advanced leg workouts that you can try. Check it out:

Talk about an intense workout!

For this routine, Tristyn Lee mixes things up and performs walking dumbbell lunges as his first exercise.

This is an unusual choice, but Tristyn feels that mixing things up in your workouts and keeping your body off balance is key for stimulating muscular hypertrophy.

Next, he moves onto his favorite hamstrings exercise: the leg curl.

Here is Tristyn describing his technique on this movement:

“When you do a leg curl, if your pelvis is swinging back and forth, you’re not actually stretching your hamstrings.

It’s not a squat where you’re just trying to maximize the amount of weight that you’re lifting.

We’re trying to maximize hypertrophy on our hamstrings, not just the load lifted.”

This is great advice!

If you want to maximize your hamstrings activation on leg curls, then you have to think about isolating your hamstrings, and using nothing else to lift the weight.

Finally, Tristyn finishes the workout with a variety of quad exercises, like hack squats, leg extensions, and Bulgarian split squats.

Tristyn says that it is absolutely essential to play with your foot positioning on exercises like hack squats.

“Your quads aren’t going to get as much stimulus if you’re not engaging your glutes at all.

So it’s not about completely taking the glutes out of the motion – it’s about finding a good foot position that allows you to shift the emphasis to the quads.”

There is no perfect place to put your feet on hack squats.

However, Tristyn is absolutely right that you want to use a foot placement where you can really feel your quads working!

For this workout, Tristyn Lee used the famous pre-exhaust method.

He started his workout with different isolation exercises, like leg extensions and leg curls.

Then, once his quads and hamstrings had been thoroughly pre-exhausted, he moved onto his compound exercises like smith machine squats and sumo leg presses.

This is a strategy that many other top bodybuilders like Dorian Yates and Branch Warren have used in their leg workout routines.

During the workout, Tristyn Lee offers some great advice on how to recruit your hamstrings.

He says you should focus on exploding the weight up on leg curls, as the hamstrings are a fast-twitch muscle, and they respond best to explosive concentric phases.

“I focus on exploding the weight up, especially on hamstrings because they are a fast-twitch muscle, so just explode as hard as you can from the bottom position.”

This is great advice!

I see too many people using high-reps and slow, controlled reps on leg curls.

If you really want your hamstrings to grow, then you have to train leg curls like you mean it! Here is one more Tristyn Lee leg workout that you can try. Check it out:

For this workout, Tristyn Lee follows a more normal exercise sequence.

He starts his workout with different heavy leg exercises, like back squats, leg presses, and hack squats. Towards the end of the workout he performs his isolation movements like leg extensions and leg curls.

As you can see, Tristyn Lee is always mixing things up in his workouts.

He believes the best way to build legs is to always keep your body off balance and to shock your muscles into growth!
