Jim Wendler has many different training templates for his 5/3/1 program, including boring but big, beefcake, and krypteia. However, one of his newer templates is called “earn the right.”
This radical new template has you perform 1 primary exercise per workout and nothing else!

The Earn The Right Template
Jim Wendler says his Earn The Right template is all about getting strong on 1 primary exercise per day.
He says this is not your best choice when you are trying to get stronger as quickly as possible. However, it can be a decent choice if your body needs a break from higher-volume workouts for a while.
“I can safely say that this template falls squarely in the “stupid” template region, not far from Idiots Cove.
So don’t use this if you are looking for something “advanced” or like to be cerebral about your lifting.”
Jim says that you can perform 2 or 3 strength training workouts per week using the Earn The Right template. For example, here is what the 3 days per week template looks like:
Jim Wendler Earn The Right 3-Day Template
Week 1
- Day 1: Squat
- Day 2: Bench press
- Day 3: Deadlift
Week 2
- Day 1: Overhead press
- Day 2: Squat
- Day 3: Bench press
And so on. You just keep rotating between your squat, bench press, deadlift, and overhead press workouts using the 4 training days.
Jim says that you can also use the Earn The Right template with just 2 workouts per week. Check it out:

- Day 1: Lower body (squat OR deadlift)
- Day 2: Upper body (bench press OR overhead press)
- Day 3: Conditioning (OPTIONAL)
Jim says the 2 days per week template is perfectly acceptable, as Earn The Right really isn’t about making progress as quickly as possible.

- Exercise #3: Sled pulls with harness, 6 sets of 40 yards
